Hawkins Cloward and Simister Firm History

Firm History

Richard Hawkins began working for Glen Gardner in 1951. For the next seven years, Glen and Richard labored to build Gardner and Hawkins from scratch. In 1959 they were joined by Keith Borup and became Gardner, Hawkins and Borup.

By the time of Glen’s retirement in 1974, the firm was highly respected for its superior work and uncompromising quality. Ronald Hawkins and David Cloward, came from national accounting firm backgrounds to become partners in 1974 and added new capacity in tax and audit services. The firm then changed its name to Hawkins, Borup and Cloward.

Hawkins, Borup and Cloward entered the computer age in 1978 by purchasing a mainframe computer at a cost of $110,000. It was a stunning leap of faith because at the time, the purchase represented six months of income for the firm. The decision is now regarded as one of many savvy management decisions made over the years that have contributed to the firm’s unsurpassed success and reputation.

In 1980, Kevin Simister became the firm’s fifth partner. Following Keith Borup’s retirement in 1993, the firm’s name changed to Hawkins Cloward & Simister.

Today, Hawkins Cloward & Simister has over 50 professionals and serves over 6,000 clients in a broad variety of businesses. The Firm has experienced growth in each of its 55+ years. The firm has been recognized as one of the 50 finest local CPA firms in North America and has been named several times as Utah’s number one CPA firm.
